HOW IT ALL BEGAN
Historically the firefighter received a low wage, this as well as the lifestyle that was unique to the fire brigade, meant that many firefighters needed a helping hand to manage their finances. The culture was that all cared for each other in a time of need. In one case a firefighter lost his house in a fire, the house was not insured, so the hat was passed around for him to purchase a new house. The giving of money or loaning large sums to help a fellow firefighter was a common event.
It was a Fire Fighter Mr Bob Overall who in the early 1970's returned from an interstate conference and suggested the setting up of a credit union. Through the efforts of Alf Newcombe who was the first secretary, the Credit Union was formally set-up in the spring of 1972. The need for a Credit Union evolved over many decades and from those early days in the 70's the Credit Union has grown to what it is today, with over 3,000 members.
Credit Unions are a financial co-operative and when you join the Credit Union you automatically become an equal owner or shareholder of the Credit Union and you have equal voting entitlements in the processes that elect the people responsible for governing your Credit Union's affairs.
