You should take steps to enhance your computer’s security and to protect yourself against identity theft. Smart phones are just as susceptible to risk of fraudulent activity as home computers or laptops and you should follow the same security precautions.

 

The following information is provided as a guide to assist you in protecting the information on your computer or phone. It is intended for information purposes only.

  • Install reputable virus software, anti-spy software and a personal internet firewall. Check with your local software supplier on the best software for you. Check for software updates regularly and install as soon as they become available
  • Think before you click’ – only click on links and attachments if you are expecting them or they are from a trusted source. Attachments or links may contain viruses or malware which could infect your computer, laptop or phone.
  • Be careful of the Wi-Fi networks you use. Where possible use secure Wi-Fi that require passwords for access and don’t conduct sensitive transactions (eg banking) on public wireless networks.
  • Keep computer access IDs and passwords confidential and secure• Choose your password carefully, ideally a combination of characters, number and symbols and change your password regularly
  • Only log in the Fire Service Credit Union’s internet banking site by entering the URL address into your address bar. Alternatively save the website address in your “Favourites” folder.
  • Check the “last logged in” information each time you log in and report any irregularities to us promptly.
  • Always click Logout to exit the website and close your Internet browser after each internet banking session• Turn off your computer when not in use

Extra tips for mobile phone security

  • Know where your mobile phone is at all times
  • Turn on your phone’s security features and set a password or PIN.
  • Don’t save passwords or PINs as contacts in your phone, even if disguised
  • Report your lost or stolen phone• Turn off Bluetooth and GPS when you are not using them
  • Permanently delete all data from your phone when you throw it away, following the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure data is permanently erased.
