International Transaction Fees Explained
What is an international transaction fee?
An international transaction fee is charged when any transaction is processed outside of Australia or in a foreign currency. There are two possible fees that you could be charged when you use your Visa Debit Card with an overseas merchant. It’s important to know that you don’t have to be overseas for these fees to apply.
Shopping online
- International Transaction Fee – 3% (Effective 1st April)
If you shop, book holidays, book hotels etc. online please be aware that any transaction processed outside of Australia or in any foreign currency will attract the fee. It may not always be obvious that your purchase is being processed overseas. Even if you are on a ‘.com.au’ paying in Australian dollars, if the transaction is being processed by the merchant outside of Australia a fee will apply.
Travelling overseas
International fees apply when you use your Visa Debit card overseas to:
- withdraw cash from an ATM – $5.00
- International Transaction Fee – 3% (Effective 1st April)
When purchasing something overseas, you might be given the option to pay in the local currency or in Australian dollars. Both scenarios will be charged the international transaction fee. While it may seem useful to see the amount you’re paying in Australian dollars, you should still check the exchange rate to see which option is best.
